A wedding registry is a list of potential wedding gifts selected by an engaged couple for guests to purchase. As guests purchase gifts for the couple either online or in a store, those items are taken off the registry. This ensures that guests don't inadvertently buy items that the couple does not need or want, or buy two copies of the same item.
- Make sure to register for gifts at a lot of different price points. Some guests may like to give you a basket full of small goodies, while others may like to go in as a group to purchase you a larger ticket item.
- Registering at at least one national Chain/Department store ensures that all your guests from around the country will be able to have access to your registry. A lot of people are still unfamiliar with online shopping, and enjoy the act of purchasing and wrapping their gifts.
- If you're buying items off a registry, it's often best to have the item shipped to the registrant's home address (rather than bringing the gift with you to the wedding). This means one less item that the couple has to bring home after the wedding is over.
- Avoid registering on dates that your store is holding a sale. Traffic is sure to be higher on those days, and sales associates may not have as much time to help you.
- If you register over six months before your wedding date, some of your items will surely go out of stock or out of season. Be sure to check your registry monthly to replace items that are no longer being sold.
- Register for many different things even if you think that no one will buy them for you because most stores offer a discount on unpurchased items from your registry after the wedding has happened. Be careful to check out the details of the discount because usually it is a one time discount which can only be applied to your purchase up to a certain date after the wedding.
- Do not feel pressured to choose everything on your registry in one visit. You can go back and complete it later and/or add things to your registry online.
- Another great opportunity to take advantage of when registering is to find out if a location near you is having an event for Wedding Registries. Usually, the store is opened only for the event attendees, there is staff on hand with knowledge on the different departments, and fun freebies and food are available.
- If you also have the chance after registering online, try to visit the store that you are registered at! It is a great time to look at and touch things, along with asking the store staff for more information about what you may want.

- Your favorite local store instead of the large chain stores
- Another site, alternativegiftregistry.org, allows you to create, as the name implies, an alternative registry. It serves as a main wish list site for items from many different stores. rather than from a single store. It was designed with the intent that couples could list individual items from their favorite independent stores (as long as the store has a website with checkout capabilities of its own), rather than brand-name products from large chains. Couples have also used it to ask for creative gifts, such as recipes. It is also possible to create a registry that allows your guests to go bargain hunting for items of your choosing; for instance, you can list that you want a particular model pot from a particular company, but the guest has the option of buying it wherever he or she feels most comfortable doing so, rather than "having" to buy it from the particular store the couple is registered at.
