Toast

A toast in weddings is a congratulatory speech usually made by the best man and/or maid of honor/matron of honor to the recently newlywed couple. Toasts are also made by the father(s) and the couple themselves to each other.

History

The history of the toast dates back to Ancient Greece. In this time period, poisoning was a great concern, especially with guests of high stature. The host of the party would pour the wine into his or her own goblet, drink from it to assure the guests and then raise the goblet to offer them to drink along with the host.

Etiquette

In wedding toasts, the order is as follows:

  • The best man toasts the bride and groom.
  • The maid of honor/matron of honor toasts the bride and groom.
  • The groom toasts the bride and her family.
  • The (two) father(s) toast the bride and groom.
  • The bride and groom toast each other.

Also,

  • Keep it between 3-5 minutes long and maintain eye contact with the happy couple.
  • Make sure all the glasses are full before the speech begins.
  • Announce your relationship to the bride and groom since not everyone may know what that is.
  • Use tasteful humor and stay PG-rated so as to not offend anyone.
  • Practice the toast beforehand.
  • Don't end with anything negative.
