Tea Ceremony

A tea ceremony is held either the day before or day of your wedding day between two people and both side of their families. Tea is used most commonly since it's the national beverage of China and not everyone drinks alcohol. Lotus seeds and two red dates are used in the tea would ensure more babies in the future as well as having sweet relations between the bride and her new family.

[edit] Typical Layout of a Ceremony

  • The bride serves the tea to her parents before the groom arrives to the house.
  • The groom arrives at the house where he and his groomsmen will go through a series of "tests" (usually involve strength test, knowledge test and last monetary test) that the bridesmaids put them through before allowing the groom to receive the bride.
  • Then the couple will serve tea to both side of their families starting from oldest to youngest.
  • Typically, the guests are sitting in chairs while the bride/groom kneel in front of them.
  • In return, the couple receives red envelopes filled with lucky money.

  • Firecrackers are used with the permission of authorities at each homes to welcome the couples as well as to ward off any evil
  • Bride leaves house carrying a red parasol to ward off any evil
  • Bride steps over burned coals to groom's home
  • Bride wears a red thread inconspicuously in her hair for luck
