Officiant

An officiant officiates or leads a wedding ceremony. They are responsible for performing the act of marriage and following all legal formalities involved; including consent of both parties, verifying witnesses present, signing the marriage certificate and maintaining all other laws (these vary by state).

An officiant is most often a clergy-person or justice of the peace but can be just about anybody (a friend or family member). Laws regarding who can officiate a wedding ceremony vary by state.
