Heterosexism is the presumption that everyone is heterosexual. In the wedding industry, heterosexism has become an issue, as the presumption that all couples are heterosexual ignores the possibility of same-sex and trans-gender weddings.
Heterosexism is an especially serious issue in the wedding publishing industry. Wedding magazines and books will often refer to the "bride and groom" in their articles, ignoring the possibility of a same-sex couple. Pictures are almost always of a male and a female partner.
Similar issues can be found in other aspects of the wedding process. Cake topper figurines almost always display a man and a woman. Wedding registries also often require one person to register as the bride and the other person to register as the groom. Many marriage licenses also only have fields for a bride and groom, even in states or countries that have legalized same-sex marriages.
Some vendors have reported heterosexist responses from clients. Some photographers have reported losing clients after posting pictures of same-sex couples on their website.
