Guest list

A guest list is a list of of all the invited guests at a wedding, pulled together by the couple getting married.

Tips

General

  • Decide what kind of event you want, whether it's an intimate gathering or a large scale celebration.
  • Calculate your budget as many expenses will rise accordingly with each additional guest.
  • Couples typically decide on a general guest list and then look for appropriate venues, but if they have their heart set on a specific venue, they may decide to work their guest list around the venue's capacity.
  • Keep in mind that approximately 10-20% of invited guests will be unable to attend. This percentage will be higher for destination weddings, and lower for weddings where there are few out-of-town guests.

Family

  • Make sure to consult with both of your families as to how many guests they'd like to invite.

Dates, Children and Coworkers

  • Decide whether or not to allow single guests to bring dates.
  • Deciding which coworkers to invite depends on the size of your office.
  • If you're opting to have an adults-only wedding, establish guidelines such as an age cut off, or children of immediate family only.
  • If you're allowing children, you may want to consider on site babysitting.

Popular Approaches

A List, B List

  • Create an A list of guests which includes immediate family, close extended family, and close friends.
  • You may opt to create a B list of guests that will be invited should A list guests be unable to attend.
