A garter toss is when a bride's garter is removed from her leg by her spouse. It is usually then tossed over the shoulder to a group of single male guests. It is said that whoever catches the garter will be the next person to be married.
The garter toss usually takes place after the bouquet toss. Sometimes the male guest who catches the garter places it on the leg of the female guest who catches the bouquet.
Some brides omit the garter toss because they are uncomfortable with the garter removal process.
[edit] Trends
- Some couples attach money to the garter to encourage male guests to participate.
- The bride should always be seated before the groom removes the garter.
- The bride may want to slide the garter down from the upper thigh to above the knee to allow for easier removal.
- If a bride is uncomfortable with the garter removal, she may choose to hand the garter to her groom.
- An anniversary dance is sometimes used in place of a bouquet and garter toss.
- Most men are shy....so one incentive is to tack a $50 bill to the garter prior to throwing it. That will be bound to be a nice surprise for that lucky someone.
