A chuppah is a canopy traditionally used in Jewish weddings. It consists of a cloth or sheet — often a prayer shawl ("tallis" or "tallit") — draped over four poles. It can be carried by attendants to the wedding ceremony's location, or it can also be free-standing at the ceremony location. It is considered an honor to carry the chuppah to the ceremony site, or to hold the chuppah during the ceremony.
The chuppah can also be decorated with flowers. A chuppah symbolizes the home the couple will build together.
Chuppahs can also used in other Jewish ceremonies, such as blessing children and naming them. More frequently though, a prayer shawl, or tallit/tallis (same word, different hebrew dialect), is used for life cycle events other than a wedding.
